SUMMARY:11th Annual Florida Tandem Rally
DESCRIPTION:Our 2019 rally in The Villages was a great success.  The last 3 years has brought a lot of changes to our home town and we are ready again to present a tandem rally for your enjoyment. \nCentral Florida is a great location for tandem riding and the location for the 11th Annual Florida Tandem Rally held in… ‘Florida’s Friendliest Home Town’…The Villages\, FL.  The new Home2 Suites by Hilton Inn in Wildwood\, FL\, will be your host for the weekend at a rate of $129.  Check out their website at  https://www.hilton.com/en/attend-my-event/ocfwwht-ptc-2846bf7c-22cc-4cff-a076-fe00783f015b/   to make your reservations or call 352-913-2100 and mention the Florida Tandem Rally for this special group rate.  Please make your reservations early to get your choice of rooms and to make the cut-off date of 20 September 2023. \nTwo daily rides are planned prior to the rally for 18 and 19 October for those who plan to arrive early.  Friday evening the Mystic Ice Cream mobile truck will be located at the Home2 Suites by Hilton to serve all their delicious homemade ice cream.  Sixteen flavors will be available and surely one of these will be your favorite.    \nSaturday’s lunch will be served in-route at the John Rohan Recreation Center and catered by La Hacienda Catering.  After lunch\, all riders will have approximately 5.3 miles to travel back to the Hilton Inn to complete the ride.  There will not be a Saturday evening banquet this year. \nDue to the excellent response in the past for the “Pedal and Paddle” kayak outing on the Silver River\, Bruce Hansen will again lead this event on Wednesday\, October 18th\, starting at 10 AM at Silver Springs State Park.  Additional information for taking part in this fun event will be available prior to the event.  Tandem and single kayaks will be available to rent or bring your own kayak if you wish.

SUMMARY:Florida Tandem Ride 2021
DESCRIPTION:Note:  Due to current COVID-19 concerns\, we have abandoned our efforts to hold the 2021 Tandem Rally in Palatka\, FL.  If you have made hotel reservations there\, you will need to cancel them.   \nWe are now doing our best to be certain that you will be able to enjoy three days of good riding in The Villages countryside on October 22-24.  We have decided to do a Ride this year instead of our usual Tandem Rally.  This means that there will be no entry fee and you will be responsible for your hotel room and meals\, since our local caterers could not commit to prices for meals or social activities.   Within the next few weeks\, we will post information about the routes and the locations of restaurants within The Villages. \nHotel accommodations will be at the Hampton Inn & Suites\, located on CR 466 between Buena Vista and Morse Blvd (street address 11727 NE 63rd Drive\, The Villages\, FL 32162).  The Florida Tandem Ride Group Rates are $124 for a standard queen or king bed and $144 for the king bed suites.  The cut-off date for reservations at the Hampton Inn will be 30 September. Of course\, you are welcome to make other lodging arrangements if desired. \nWe invite all who arrive early to ride with PANTHERS on their regular Thursday rides.  The ride will start at 8:30am in the parking lot adjacent to the Waterfront Inn and distances should vary from 20 to 30 miles.   If you arrive after this ride start\, route sheets will be available for short or longer distances. \nIf you are a PANTHERS Club member\, please wear your Club jersey on Saturday’s ride. \nOn Wednesday\, October 20th\, those of you who plan on pedaling can also do some padding on the Silver River in Silver Springs State Park before the start of the Ride.  We will depart from the parking lot next to the Waterfront Inn at Sumter Landing at 9 AM to go to the park\, about 45-50 minutes away.  We will rent kayaks to paddle down the river for about three hours to a take out (Ray Wayside Park) where shuttle service will be provided with the rental.  Single kayaks rent for 40 dollars plus taxes and fees and tandem kayaks rent for 55 dollars plus taxes and fees.  Hoping to hit the water at 10 AM\, the paddle will go with the gentle flow of the river. The water is crystal clear and is a steady 72 degrees. The river is very pretty with lots to see: many different kinds of birds\, lots of turtles\, gators (that want to be left alone)\, eagles and jumping fish.  There is a community of monkeys that is fun to watch but we must stay away from them because of their sometimes aggressive behavior and concerns about disease. Paddlers will be expected to have a packed lunch and a drink with them which will be enjoyed on the river.  The recreational kayaks we are renting are very stable and if you have any questions\, our vendor or I will be glad to assist.  Life jackets will be provided and I strongly encourage you to wear them even if the risk of going into the water is very small.  After the paddle adventure I plan on stopping for ice cream on our way back to The Villages.  Up to 30 people can be accommodated on this trip so please email Bruce Hansen (bruhansen1@gmail.com) your intentions to join us as soon as you can. \n

SUMMARY:Palatka Memorial Ride
DESCRIPTION:The PANTHERS are again planning a Memorial Ride in honor of those members who are not with us today\, including Ray Cannarella\, Bob Duncan\, Ed Schenck\, Ed Brandt\, Ellen Mickelson and Susan Hansen. \nYour response has been great.  We have confirmation from 27 teams who will attend the PANTHERS Memorial Ride in Palatka\, FL.  This ride will be held during the weekend of 16-18 April and will be headquartered at the Quality Inn\, located at 201 N 1ST Street\, Palatka\, FL.  Make your reservations now by calling Quality Inn at (386) 328-3481 and ask for the PANTHERS Ride rate of $90 per night.  Rooms at the Quality Inn open to the exterior rather than an interior hallway.  Please call now and confirm your reservations for the weekend. \nIf you would like to add extra mileage to this weekend\, Hank and Kathy Williams ask that you contact them at   1biglot@gmail.com  for more information.  They will be riding the 69 mile trip from their home in The Villages to Palatka\, FL\, on Thursday 15 April.  After the Memorial Ride they will ride back to The Villages on Monday 19 April.  The route traverses 35 miles through the Ocala National Forest and there are convenient rest stops along the way. \nThe two rides that we are promoting for this weekend are riding on the Palatka-Lake Butler Rails to Trail.  Riding east you can intersect the trail a 1.3 miles and ride 20 miles out and back for a total of 40 miles.  Riding to the west you will travel through Palatka for 2.8 miles\, get on the trail at 7.2 miles and ride for 26 miles out and back for a total of 52 miles.  Convenient rest areas are at both turn around points.  You will be furnished route sheets for additional rides of 26\, 33\, 36\, 38\, 48\, and 61 miles. \nWe are happy to announce that the SAG for this event will be furnished by Putman Bicycles.  This is a local father and son shop located only nine blocks from the Quality Inn and you may contact them at [386] 328-9033.  This contact number will be included on all route sheets. \nThere are a number of restaurants that you may want to visit during the weekend.  Adjacent to the Quality Inn is Beef-O-Brady’s\, and two blocks to the west is the historical Angel’s Dining Car which is the oldest of its kind in Florida.  The menu has a lot of familiar diner items like breakfast food and burgers but most intriguing are the unusual items like the pusalow (think chocolate & vanilla syrup iced milk drink) and black bottom sandwich.  Choose the latter\, a combination of bacon\, hamburger\, and scrambled egg\, and you will find it is good.  Musselwhites Seafood is located 1.3 miles to the east and Corkey Bell’s Seafood is 1.8 miles to the east of the Quality Inn.  And for those who like things a little spicy you must check out Mariachiles\, a Mexican restaurant 2 blocks away on St. Johns Ave\, or La Hacienda III Mexican Restaurant just 1.9 miles on Crill Ave.  There is also an Uncork & Unwind Craft Beer and Wine establishment just 2 blocks away.  So there will be plenty of routes available for riding and excellent food and drink to replenish the calories. \nAs in the past\, all PANTHERS Rides are free to members and under COVID-19 conditions we will not plan large social gatherings this year. \nMake plans now to attend and get your reservations in early. \n  \nIf you have questions or need additional information please email Bob Thompson at   rjt3jc@embarqmail.com
